In my husbands classroom there hung a poster for many years that said, “There are two ways of spreading light… being the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”
Nature is like a candle. God’s direct handiwork is awe-inspiring and beyond comprehension. The hymn writer penned the famous words, “Oh Lord my God when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made…” Representational art – art that seeks to show nature in a realistic manner highlighting the natural world’s magnificent beauty is like a mirror. It reflects something of the original light.
We are drawn to the beauty in nature and as artists we often love to paint what we see in many varied expressions of artistic interpretation. When I am in such a state of creating I can’t help but ponder that everything wonderful that I discover in art points me back to the Great Creator. Studying nature through the lens of art makes me consider the God who made nature. And He is truly glorious.
